Medellín police announced Friday the capture of three suspects in the killing of Eric Fernando Gutiérrez Molina, a U.S. citizen and American Airlines flight attendant found dead in March.
Investigators say a gang known as “Los Goteros” targeted foreigners — mainly LGBTIQ+ tourists — via dating apps, building trust before drugging and robbing them. Gutiérrez was contacted through a dating app, met the suspects at a nightclub in El Poblado, and was later drugged at a hotel. Medicina Legal ruled the cause of death as mechanical asphyxiation. The group drained his bank accounts and stole a gold chain, worth around 30 million pesos, before dumping his body in a wooded area near Jericó.
Two suspects had fled abroad and were tracked down in Peru through Interpol alerts; a third, a woman, was arrested in Montería. Extradition of one suspect from Lima is underway.
Mayor Federico Gutiérrez said the case shows the city won’t let such crimes go unpunished, crediting joint work by Medellín police, the Fiscalía, Interpol, Peruvian authorities, the U.S. Embassy and HSI.
