The death of 41-year-old Dutch tourist Marlies Minke Genz has become a mystery in Salento, Quindío, after she was found dead following nearly a week missing.
Genz was last seen on May 25. According to authorities, she left her hostel around 1:00 p.m. that day to do a coffee farm tour at a finca about an hour away on foot. She never returned, and was reported missing by a local hotel. Days later, her body was found floating in a small lake in the rural vereda of Palestina.
Security camera footage showed her walking through the area with no signs of trouble and no one following her, heading toward a second hotel where she had a reservation but never arrived. Her trail was lost at a blind spot about 100 meters from that hotel, in an area with no camera coverage.
The body has been taken to Medicina Legal, where an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. The Quindío Secretary of the Interior said security cameras will be key to establishing what happened, and that if it is confirmed she was killed, authorities will act to capture those responsible. The investigation is ongoing.
