Authorities in eastern Antioquia have arrested a Colombian-American man in the rural village of La Floresta, San Vicente Ferrer, for severe animal abuse and illegal possession of wildlife.
A coordinated operation involving the Environmental Police, Army, Antioquia Governor’s Office, local officials, and environmental authority Cornare uncovered 37 animals in poor health, including 33 malnourished dogs and four reptiles—two caimans and two boas—kept in unsuitable enclosures, including inside the suspect’s bedroom.
Officials described the animals’ conditions as “deplorable,” citing extreme malnutrition, disease, and neglect. The man claimed to have acquired the reptiles in Guatapé, but authorities doubt the story, noting that these species are not naturally found in the area.
He now faces charges of aggravated animal cruelty and illegal use of natural resources.
